Down On The Farm Minor League Report 8/23/08 Part 1
Triple A
After feasting on star blogger Phil Hughes yesterday, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs were held scoreless as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees beat them 4-0. Starting for Scranton was Chase Wright and he pitched 7 scoreless innings giving up 5 hits for the win. He has a ridiculous 2.05 era. This is the worst team Wright pitched against but he did what he was supposed to do. Phil Coke pitched a perfect 8th inning and Scott Strickland pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 12th save. I’m wondering why that’s a save when he came in the game with a 4 run lead.
The hitting stars of the game for Scranton worth mentioning were DH Shelley Duncan who went 1 for 3 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi and right-fielder Matt Carson who went 2 for 4 with 1 rbi.
*Note* Justin Christian went 1 for 4 with 1 rbi and Melky Cabrera went 2 for 3 with a walk.

Double A
The Trenton Thunder won easily over the Reading Phillies by a score 6-1. Starting for Trenton was Victor Zambrano, yes, THAT Victor Zambrano and he pitched a great game giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits in 7 innings of work for the win. His era is 0.75. He sure is making it an interesting case. Replacing Zambrano to start the 8th inning was Michael Gardner and he pitched 2 perfect innings. The hitting stars of the game for Trenton worth mentioning were catcher Francisco Cervelli, center fielder Colin Curtis and DH P.J. Pilittere. Cervelli went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi. Curtis went 1 for 3 with 2 rbi’s and Pilittere went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.

Class A
Game 1
The Charleston RiverDogs destroyed the Columbus Catfish and won by a score of 14-2 in a game that was previously suspended on 8/22/08. Starting for the RiverDogs was Ryan Zink and he gave up 1 earned run on 1 hit in 3 innings of work for the no decision. He also had 5 strikeouts. Replacing Zink to start the 4rth inning was Craig Heyer and he pitched 3 scoreless innings giving up 2 hits for the win. His era is 1.92. Pitching the 7th inning was Angel Reyes and he gave up 1 earned run on 2 hits.
Believe it or not, the RiverDogs had no home runs even though they scored 14 runs. The hitting stars of the game for the RiverDogs worth mentioning were center fielder Austin Krum, DH Jesus Montero and short stop Carmen Angelini. Krum went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 rbi’s. Montero went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 1 rbi and Angelini went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 rbi’s.

Game 2
The Charleston RiverDogs lost to the Columbus Catfish by a score of 8-6 in the second game of their double header. Starting for the RiverDogs was Dellin Betances and he gave up 5 earned runs on 9 hits in 5 innings of work for the no decision. I expected more out of Betances especially after his 12 strikeout performance in his last outing. Replacing Betances to start the 6th inning was Chace Vacek and he gave up 3 earned runs on 3 hits in 2 innings for the blown save and the loss.
The hitting stars of the game for the RiverDogs worth mentioning were first baseman Austin Krum who went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 1 rbi along with a home run and first baseman Brandon Laird who went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 rbi’s.
