Yankees beat Twins in 12 innings 9-6

Yankees win

The Yankee won over the Minnesota Twins by a score of 9-6 in 12 innings. Starting for the Yankees was Mike Mussina and he gave up 3 earned runs on 8 hits in 7 innings of work for the no decision. What a shame. Mike Mussina has about 8 starts left and the window is closing in his quest for 20 wins in an otherwise disappointing season for the Yankees. Damaso Marte got 1 out in the 8th inning and left two men on base for Mariano Rivera. With the Yankees in the lead, 6-3, Rivera gave up a 3 run home run to left-fielder Delmon Young to blow the game and it was tied. Rivera pitched 1.2 innings and his line was 1 earned run on 2 hits. Jose Veras pitched a perfect 10th and 11th inning for the win. Edwar Ramirez pitched a perfect 12th inning for his 1st save. The hitting stars of the game for the Yankees worth mentioning were Alex Rodriguez and Xavier Nady. They both hit home runs in the top of the 12th inning to help the Yankees pull away from the Twins. A-Rod went 1 for 6 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi along with a home run and Nady went 2 for 5 with 1 run scored and 4 rbi’s.

The Yankees are too far away from the Red Sox in the playoff race and the Yankees won’t catch them with the way this current team is made. There’s too much inexperience and too much inconsistency. This year is just not the Yankees year.

The Disgraceful Player of the Game was Robinson Cano for getting caught off of second base after the line drive was hit. The play characterizes his year. Lazy and disgraceful. Not only was that play a disgrace, it was a nightmare.

  1. That was an awesome win. I stayed up for the whole game. A-Rod came through.

  2. THE X MAN CAME THROUGH AS WELL RICK!!

  3. You’re both right, Rick and BabyRuth. I really like that you point out the X-Man, BabyRuth, for he’s become one of my very favorite players right away. I too call him X-Man on my blog, Heartland Pinstripes. The guy has had clutch hit after clutch hit. After starting out 1-11 as a Yankee, he’s gone 20-50 since (.400). That’s ridiculous.

Mariano’s blown save, his first this year, was enough to have my head in my hands but he held it shut afterwards, and Veras was as important as any player tonight. JD and Jeter were big at the top of the lineup (6-11 combined), and Giambi was 2-2 with 2 walks. Simply put, JD and Giambi cannot sit the rest of the way unless they’re injured–lefty or righty on the mound. They must play. JD is leading the AL in batting but sat the other night against a lefty who was allowing lefties to hit .338 off him. Awful decision.

It’s a tough situation the Yanks are in but it’s not over yet. A blistering quarter-season just might do it, but they need to do it.

  4. I am interested to here why M. Rivera wasn’t the disgraceful player of the game. His blown save took a win out of Mussina’s book and nearly cost the yanks.

  5. I didn’t pick Rivera because the Yankees might not of been in that situation if Cano didn’t make that lazy attempt off of second. Rivera’s allowed to blow a game. This was his first one all year but if he does it again, I’ll have to give him consideration.
