Background:

Was drafted in the 46th round by the New York Yankees out of Immaculata High School Somerville, N.J. in 2009. The 6-1, 195-pound left-hander started his career at Hunterdon Central and then transferred to Immaculata. He had a solid senior season for Immaculata coach Tommy Gambino’s Spartans. He finished the year with a 7-2 record, and made first-team All-Somerset County, All Skyland Conference and second-team All-State Non-Public honors.

DeLuca accepted a scholarship offer to play at the University of San Diego and they arranged for him to play in a collegiate baseball league in Washington State. The Yankees’ West Coast scouts stayed in touch.

DeLuca played in the summer league in Washington state and pitched very well. He went 4-0 as a starter, and increased his velocity and was hitting in the 96-97 mph range consistently. He came back east and threw a game for the local scouts and then set in motion the bidding for his services with time running out.

Scouting Report:

Strengths:

Evan has a good strong pitchers build with outstanding presence on the mound. He gets good life on his fastball which topped out at 90 mph on the Metronome. In the summer league he was throwing 96-97 consistently. He has good balance in his delivery and repeats well. He throws a nice change up with sink and fade and also shows good feel for his breaking stuff. Has great movement on all of his pitches. He also threw 91 from the OF and showed athleticism by running a 7.05 sixty yard dash.

He’s a powerful lefty with a super delivery and great pick-off move which is one of the best in the business.

He’s smart and has a great work ethic.

Another positive is that he wants to play for the New York Yankees. Says DeLuca… “I have been dreaming of being a New York Yankee since I was a little kid, always been a huge fan and now it is a dream come true.”

Weaknesses:

He’s trying to develop his curve ball. Since he delivers the ball side arm, the Yankees want to raise his arm slot so he can pitch the ball down instead of getting under the ball. It will also allow him to throw more strikes. He has to throw his change up down in the zone more for the pitch to be successful. Because he throws side arm, he’ll lose command of the strike zone.

Pitches:

Boasts a four- and two-seam fastball, cutter, slider, change up and a fade. His fastball will top out at 89-91 mph during longer outings. Once he grows more into his body, the velocity on his fastball should improve. His fastball has some sinking action to it.

Will have a very good curve ball once he learns to throw it over the top.

His change up has good fading action.

The future:

He will start his career in the Gulf Coast League playing for the Gulf Coast Yankees.
