According to the NY Post’s Joel Sherman two days ago, the New York Yankees were talking regularly to the representatives for Reed Johnson of the Chicago Cubs. He’ll be 32 at the start of the year.

Assets:
Hits well with runners in scoring position and makes a lot of contact. Another big asset is that he hustles. Has great career numbers against left-handed pitchers batting .313 with a .378 on-base percentage and a .463 slugging percentage. In 2009 it was better. He batted .324/.403/.500. He can play all three outfield positions.

Negatives:
Does not hit right-handed pitching well and struggles against finesse pitchers. Does not have a good strikeout/walk ratio.

Outlook:
Johnson hits better when batting 7th in the order at a .385 clip. If the Yankees do sign him, he’ll be a good 4rth outfielder for them.
