Derek Jeter and My Racism
Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees won Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated.
I was always surprised at how grounded Jeter was when I watched his interviews. A lot of great athletes don’t act like him. He always acts respectful and you never hear him tearing any one else down and you never “hear” Jeter. He’s not a loud mouth. He’s one of the classiest athletes I’ve ever seen. He acts polite and is respectful towards every one.
He also has a lot of charitable works. That in itself is impressive to what Jeter is as a human being.
Back in the mid 90′s, I wasn’t a racist but I thought like one. I didn’t wish the destruction of the black race and I never thought about black people much but I didn’t think highly of them. Derek Jeter changed that with me.
Sure, he’s white but he’s also black. I wondered how a man like this can be so grounded because he had a black father. I’ve heard from Reverand Al Sharpton that black men don’t stay with the mother of their child. Whether that is true or not, Jeter’s father did.
When you look at other black athletes that act stupid or foolish, there’s always Jeter there for you. He makes you believe in the argument that it’s not the race but the individual person. You can also look at the point that it’s how you’re raised. It looks as though Derek Jeter had a great upbringing from his black father. Derek Jeter is a testament to his black father and white mother.
I want to say to the white people that don’t like blacks. Look around you. I’m sure you hate just as many white people.
