John Lackey and the New York Yankees
John Lackey is a free agent pitcher from the Los Angeles Angels. The Yankees were impressed by the toughness John Lackey showed in this year’s American League playoffs.
The Angels could at least offer him arbitration and would likely be his top choice should the Texas Rangers’ management not be able to make a play for him. He’d be playing in a weaker division, on a perennial contender and for a great manager.
One of the things that aided the Yankees success this year was the attitude of the new free agents and them being able to fit into the New York scene. We’ve seen what happens when that is not the case with Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown and Javier Vazquez.
Given the attention that Brian Cash reportedly paid in the mental makeup of CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark Teixeira, I’m sure he will check out the mental make up of John Lackey if he hasn’t already.
