Yankee Fans: Was it a satisfying World Series?

I’ve seen seven New York Yankees’ world championships in my lifetime. The 1977, 78, 96, 98, 99, 2000 and 2009 World Series. I was a little too young for the 77 and 78 teams but I do remember liking Mickey Rivers and Ron Guidry. I was born in 1970 so you do the math.

Out of all the World Series I witnessed, the 1996 Championship was the most satisfying for me. I grew up in the 80′s and all I had was Don Mattingly. He was the only good thing going for the Yankees growing up. I even copied my baseball stance for little league after him.

Every April, all of us Yankee fans would have hope that the new baseball season would bring a baseball title in October but it would never come. We’ve waited, and waited and waited and waited and then 1995 came. As a fan, I thought that was our best shot we’ve had in a long time to win.

It didn’t happen but then 1996 happened. When John Wetteland threw the last pitch to Luis Polonia and he popped it up to Charlie Hayes? What emotion I felt. It was relief and happiness all rolled into one. The 1996 World Series was the most satisfying one to me. The Yankees weren’t expected to win, they haven’t won in a long time and they pulled through and did it.

Now we have the 2009 world series. I was talking to a family member of mine during our Sunday 1:00 PM Italian dinner. He said that the 2009 World Series wasn’t that satisfying because the Yankees were expected to win with such a high payroll. Not even the nine year drought would make him think different.

He said some one on the radio joked about how a Phillie player would ground out to the highest paid third baseman and he would throw the ball to the highest paid first baseman. Then a Phillie player would make another out by trying to steal second and the highest paid catcher would throw it to the highest paid short stop.

To him, the World Series wasn’t as satisfying because of the payroll issue. I agreed with him that if the Yankees’ payroll was the same as the rest of the league it would of been a more exciting world series. I still felt satisfied.

What about you? Was it satisfying to you? Was it as satisfying to you as other World Series titles or was 1996 the best?

  1. For some reason, the comment section was “off.” I have no idea why that happened but I just remade the thread again.

  2. I would have to agree with you, nothing compares to the 1996 World Series. I was born in 1987 making it my first world series. It could also be because 96’ was my first time experiencing a Yankee parade and everything else that comes with a Yankee championship. Everything was new to me then, I didn’t know what to expect after that last out. I now, in 2009, know what to expect when I see that last out. The core four were the rookies in 96’, which just goes to show how special that season really was.

This year seemed more like 98’ to me then 96’. In 1998 it was an extremely exciting year but the whole year you had that feeling that they were going to win it all at the end. I felt the same way this year. From day one I felt good about this season and all throughout the playoffs I never doubted this team, which reminded me of the 1998 Yankees. 1996 they started the World Series down 0-2 from home and then they came back and won it in 6 at home! That was just a magical moment that can’t be matched. Unexpected is always more exciting. Kind of like the Giants winning the super bowl 2 years ago! Now that compared to the 96’ Yankees!

1996 was a start to a dynasty and in my opinion 2009 is also a start to a new dynasty. It’s exciting to know we will have CC, Tex, and AJ for years to come.

The 96’ Yankees were all “true” Yankees. Our farm system made some truly amazing players and superstars that year. This year we bought some truly amazing players and for that reason we were expected to win the whole year.

Don’t get me wrong, this year was full of excitement and was a fun team to watch. I will say that their team chemistry did compare to the 1996 Yankees. Watching them open the stadium, Mo getting his 500th save, Jeter passing Lou on the all times list, and lastly them winning it all in their new stadium in it’s first year! Well you can’t beat that and it made the new stadium a little easier for us all to get use to, a start of a new dynasty. I now feel comfortable calling it the home of the New York Yankees and also am finally ready to say goodbye to the old stadium.

  3. It must of been great experiencing a parade after a Yankee win. Every time something is new, I think it’s probably better. That’s another reason why I liked 96, it seemed new to me because I was too young to remember 77 and 78.

Even though I’m not a Giants fan, I do like watching the highlights of them beating the Patriots because I’m not a fan of anything in the New England area beause of Boston. That was a great moment, watching Eli throw the winning touch down pass. It’s my favorite Super Bowl moment ever.

When they won from coming back 0-2, it was magical. That was another great moment for the Yankees.

I hope 2009 is a start of a dynasty. That would be awesome. I was talking to my father about it and he thinks the Yankees could win with the same exact team. I still think they need to find a fourth starter for the playoffs but Wang is coming back so we’ll see.

The 96 team brought us, Pettitte, Rivera, Posada and Jeter. That’s as core as you can get. They are the “true” Yankees.

I also felt that the Yankees would win it all this year because of chemistry, the pie throwing in the face by Burnett, Jeter and A-Rod getting along really well. It was in the stars for the Yankees to win.

  4. I think the best way to answer this question, would be to ask someone who’s first world series championship was this year, 2009. They would most likely be too young to have that much of a perspective on this topic yet, but I’d be curious to see. Then again everything is more exciting when your a kid? isn’t it?

  5. I agree kate. We’ll have to wait until kids now who experienced this win for the first time feel about it when they get older.

We will win more series titles in the future too!

  6. True, every thing is more exciting when you are a kid. If this is a young kid’s first experience with the world series, I’m sure if the Yankees win it next year in 2010, 2009 would be more exciting to him.

I agree on that one Susie! The Yankees will win more especially with the Hal at the reigns.
