You know, if the Yankees lost yesterday, I was going to put some blame on Derek Jeter. He’s been grounding out at an alarming rate. I don’t have any stats for it but I see it with my own eyes. I used to have more confidence in him when he would get up in a big spot but now, I hate to say it, I don’t.
Last night, he scored three times. I don’t know whether to say he had a good night or bad night. I do know one thing however. He did hit a lot of ground outs.
Take last night for instance. In the top of the third, he scored because he got on base because of a fielder’s choice.
Then in the top of the fourth, he grounded out with a man on first and third with two outs. When he was up, I said to myself, I wonder if he’ll hit a ground out? He did.
Then we come to the top of the sixth. It looked as though the Yankees had a rally going. After Colin Curtis got a big hit and scored Curtis Granderson, Jeter got up and you know what happened… he grounded into a double play.
In the top of the ninth, he walked and scored. He didn’t face any one with men on base however. He just walked. It was good that he did however.
Here’s what killed me. In the top of the tenth, Curtis Granderson gave the Yankees the lead with a home run. Gardner singled, stole second and then Chad Huffman walked. Wow! It looks like Derek Jeter can drive in a run for us! You know the story. He hits into a ground out, double play to end the inning.
It seems that Derek Jeter has been killing a lot of rallies. Maybe it’s age or maybe it’s bad timing but he hasn’t been clutch, that’s for sure. This year, he’s been hitting a lot of ground out double plays.
Soon, it will be time to switch Derek Jeter from lead off.
