Swisher, the Yankees’ right-fielder and social-media titan, held off Kevin Youkilis of the rival Red Sox in the closest race in the nine-year history of the Final Vote to claim the 34th and final spot on the All-Star roster with a final tally of 9.8 million votes. Yankees official site
Now, the question is, did Swisher “deserve” to win the final spot over Youkilis? I say yes. First let’s look at some facts… Swisher has a .298 average to go along with 14 homers, 48 RBIs and 52 runs. Youkilis has a .292 average with 17 home runs, 55 RBIs and 66 runs.
Swisher has a higher average but not by much. Youkilis has more RBI and home runs and a lot more runs. I can see you making a case for Youkilis over Swisher. However, here’s why I feel Swisher deserved it…
This is the All “STAR” game and Swisher is a star. Youkilis is quiet and not much is known about his personality. This isn’t about personality however. Swisher had some big time clutch hits this year and brings a spark to the Yankees. Swisher is such a star that he even had a campaign run for himself to get himself voted in. Are you going to tell me that’s not a star? That’s some one who “wants” to be in the spot light and wants to play the game in front of millions watching on tv. He’s a celebrity and baseball celebrities play all star games, not quiet types.
Nick Swisher, congrats on your selection. You deserve it.
